Character Breakdown

OLIVER (MALE, MID-TO-LATE 30S, BLACK OR AFRO-LATINO)

Alisha’s father. Equal parts charming and infuriating, Oliver is a man who has always survived by bending the rules, and genuinely believes that makes him wise. Beneath his bravado and bad decisions is a man who loves his daughter fiercely and knows, even if he won’t say it, that he is not the future she deserves. The role requires both broad comedy and quiet heartbreak — often in the same scene.

ALISHA (plays 13, Afro-Latina — actor must be 18 or older)

The heart of the play. Alisha is whip-smart, self-possessed, and far more aware of the world around her than the adults give her credit for. She moves through the play’s formal “academic review” scenes with a poise and wit that contrasts sharply with the chaos of her home life. The role demands exceptional range: a young actor who can hold a room intellectually, land deadpan comedy, and carry real emotional weight in scenes of loss and longing.

VICTORIA (40s–60s, Asian-American) THIS ROLE IS CAST

Teresa (early/mid 30’s, Latina) THIS ROLE IS CAST

Patrick (late 20’s, White) THIS ROLE IS CAST
